Fabio Capello has picked his 30 man provisional England squad for the World Cup. It looks like this:

My immediate reactions: No surprise with the goalkeepers, it’s basically the three we expect. The only question is who will start. But that’s a question for another day.

Two gambles in defence are Jame Carragher, who retired from England duty in 2007, and Ledley King whose knee problem means he famously can’t train properly and can’t play too many games in close proximity to each other. Still, the man is quality. Nice to see his Spurs defensive partner Michael Dawson get a call too. Since there are no other right backs in the 30, I think we can assume Carragher has been drafted in as a reserve centre back, but also as cover for Glen Johnson at right back. The presence of three left backs means Capello still hasn’t chosen whether to take Stephen Warnock or Leighton Baines as cover for Ashley Cole.

In midfield, young Adam Johnson’s inclusion catches the eye. Gareth Barry makes it despite injury worries, Scott Parker’s recent form has been enough to get him a shot at the final 23, and Joe Cole will be relieved, since there was a lot of talk of him being left out. Men who actually were left out include Ashley Young (who might wonder why Man City benchwarmer Shaun Wright-Phillips is preferred) and Owen Hargreaves (who literally hasn’t played professional football in years, so not really a huge surprise).

Up front it’s the usual suspects: Heskey, Rooney, Crouch, Defoe. Followed by unusual suspect Darren Bent, who it seemed Capello wasn’t a fan of, yet there he is in the 30, which means no place for Bobby Zamora.

I’m disappointed about Zamora, and a little concerned that we don’t have a more attacking option as cover for Glen Johnson (though maybe James Milner could do a job if needed) but other than that, nothing to complain about. The only question now… which seven players does Capello drop to make it 23?
